Tourism in Algeria


Algeria is the largest country in Africa and the 10th largest in the world in terms of total area countries. Located in North Africa, one of the main tourist attractions is the Sahara, the second largest desert in the world1. Some sand dunes can reach 180 meters hauteur2,3. This State is a member of the World Tourism Organization since 1976 but tourism in Algeria is not yet in its infancy. The tourism revenues do not exceed 10% of gross domestic product and the country ranks 147th in the world. The tourism sector in Algeria represents 3.9% of the volume of exports, 9.5% of the rate of productive investment and 8.1% of GDP.

The tragic events of the early 1990s delayed infrastructure development and discouraged many tourists staying there. However, the trend tends to inverser4 with a return of foreigners, especially tourism affinity from France. We note, for example, a 20% increase in tourism between 2000 and 2005.

The main competitors are the Mediterranean countries the majority of which has developed strongly in this sector5 based economy.
Tourism policy of the state [change | change the code]
Developed at the "National and International Conference on Tourism" project was created to provide a new home dynamics and management of tourism in Algeria. This project is called (2025). Foreign investors, mostly French, are positioned to dominate the market, focusing mainly on business customers.

The first advertising campaign dedicated to the industry was created to attract investors such as foreign customers, as well as concrete measures such as conferences, trade shows or commissions6.

International footballer Zinedine Zidane was also put to use for a new ad produced this time under the aegis of the phone operator, Wataniya Telecom Algeria, for a individuelle7 customers.

A Quality Plan Tourism Algeria was adopted by the government but by the end of 2010, only 10% of tourist facilities in Algeria have joined the program. Investors are interested in the potential of the country and the highest authorities as the representative of the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Frédéric Perret, said at the conference of the International Exhibition of Tourism and Travel light in Algeria in 2010, the Algerian tourism sector has great potential thanks to "its Mediterranean beaches, the fascinating national Park Djurdjuran, its human treasures, culture and history."

As part of the development policy of Tourism, 'Eductour' are held regularly for the national press and internationale8.

Algerians travel daily within the country. As such, air travel remains the fastest way to connect cities.

The length Algerian road network is 112 696 km. Distances by road is long and limited but East-West highway project is underway. Failure highway paved road network is dense with the highest density in Africa (107 000 km of roads.) North provides better rest than the South. Buses remain the main public means of transport, followed by train and taxi. In the north, networks of buses and taxis are well developed with regular services between major cities. Algerian fleet is estimated at 3 million vehicles. It is constantly augmentation9.

Algeria has 33 airports, including 13 international vocation, the most important is the Algiers Airport - Houari Boumedienne. The national airline Air Algeria, meanwhile dominates the airline market which has since its opening to competition 08 other private companies. It handles multiple lines to Europe, Africa, Canada, China, the Middle East. Several foreign airlines have flights to Algeria as: Tunisair, Royal Air Morocco, Airfrance, Alitalia, Aigle Azur, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, JetAirFly, Iberia, Air Malta, Air Méditerranée, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Royal Jordanian, TAP Portugal, Saudia, Egypt Air, Vueling.

Algeria has 13 ports. The National Shipping Business Traveller Algeria Ferries is one of the actors shipping in Algeria. Several ferries are linking passengers to European shores.

Algeria has a rail network of more than 4 500 km, part of which is electrified. The most frequent rail connections are located along the coast and serving all major port cities. The south is connected by two lines, Bechar to the West and Touggourt to the east are the southernmost stations. It has 200 stations.
